FestiVal

MAIN IDEA
U:NEW Dance Wave Festival was created by Agata Życzkowska – choreographer, performer, actress, producer, and dance curator – who has been developing contemporary dance projects for several years and actively supporting dance artists, with a particular recent focus on young and emerging voices. She is also the founder of the Warsaw-based dance company HOTELOKO Company. U:NEW Dance Wave Festival is a meeting between the HOTELOKO Company and the Warsaw audience, as well as a platform for expanding international cooperation.

The aim of the festival is to support young creators by creating space for intergenerational dialogue between emerging artists and established figures. The event is cyclical and engages audiences in reflecting on the role of dance in the context of contemporary social and ecological challenges. We place particular emphasis on queer and ecofeminist perspectives, as well as on the mental well-being of participants – both creators and audiences – recognizing art as a space of care, diversity, and shared experience.

IV U:NEW DANCE WAVE FESTIVAL
“NOC TAŃCA / FALA TAŃCA” (Dance Night / Wave of Dance) is a special festival evening featuring two performances conceptualized and choreographed by Agata Życzkowska: the premiere of “(M)OTHERS”, and “LUXA”, which explores the theme of luxury in relation to women (selected for the Polish Dance Platform 2024). The evening also includes four video dance films: “Becoming Taiga” by Agnieszka Gąsiorek, “Look Around” by Zuzanna Kupidura, “Trzcina/Reed” by Anna Sochacka and “Twilight” by the HOTELOKO collective, as well as two choreographic etudes by Ola Komarnicka and Aleksandra Janoska.
“NEW WAVE in Dance” is a festival evening of the HOTELOKO movement makers collective, held in Białołęka district in Warsaw, showcasing two performances: “LUXA” and “SOLARPUNK” (created in collaboration with Mirek Woźniak), which presents an optimistic vision for the future of our planet. The evening also includes a screening of the film “Twilight”, with music by Weronika Ratusińska-Zamuszko, performed by Karina Szutko and Maciej Feliga. On the same day, the “Follow the Movement” dance workshop will be led by dancer and choreographer Mirek Woźniak, also taking place at the Białołęka Cultural Centre.
CODASI Multiplier Event is a series of events dedicated to contemporary dance, including meetings, presentations of performances, choreographic etudes, and films – featuring the final results of the CODASI (Contemporary Dance for Sustainability and Inclusion) project. The project aims to facilitate the exchange of knowledge and best practices in order to develop tools across European countries.
Partner organizations involved in the CODASI project are: Dame de Pic Asbl / cie Karine Ponties / Brussels, Belgium, La Galerie Chorégraphique / Carcassonne, France, L’ESPACE APS/ASD / Zappulla DMN Company / Palermo, Italy, Fundacja Rozwoju Teatru ‘NOWA FALA’ / HOTELOKO movement makers collective / Warsaw, Poland, ASSOCIATION KULTURANOVA UDRUZENJE / Novi Sad, Serbia
The project is based on two core concepts: inclusion and sustainability. Inclusion is understood as practices that broaden access to the dance community, enabling greater participation regardless of individual background or circumstances. Sustainability is understood in a broad sense, including human aspects (protection of physical and mental resources of artists), economic aspects, and environmental aspects (respect for natural resources). The performances and films presented at the Centre for the Promotion of Culture and the Zbigniew Raszewski Theatre Institute reflect the values of the CODASI project.

The program featured two choreographic works by the festival organizer, the HOTELOKO movement makers collective: “SOLARPUNK/In.To.Da.Te” – a performance concept by Agata Życzkowska and“LUXA” – a duet performed by Karina Szutko and Agata Życzkowska

Highlights included:“LOVE (H)U-MAN’S LOVE” by Zappulla DMN Company (Sicily) and “tono”, a solo performance by Elisa Medina Hudgins (Mexico).
Festival Mission & Evolution
This edition continued the vision established in the first two editions:
- To create a space for connection between the HOTELOKO movement makers collective and Warsaw audiences
- To present works in the fields of contemporary dance, new dance, experimental choreography, and performance art
- To promote young and emerging artists, and support the development of new dance audiences
A key element of the festival remains the presentation of debut works and new artistic visions by the younger generation, with a strong focus on innovation and socially engaged art.
In 2023, the organizing foundation – Fundacja Rozwoju Teatru ‘NOWA FALA’ (NEW WAVE Foundation) – decided to change the festival name from International Movement Festival U:NEW to U:NEW Dance Wave Festival, combining the foundation’s brand (“New Wave”) with the “Dance Wave” evenings it organized between 2020–2022. This rebranding helps simplify communication while continuing the festival’s international scope.
Background
U:NEW Dance Wave Festival was born during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2021. Despite the global challenges, creators from Norway, Italy, Germany, Spain (Basque Country), and France came to Warsaw in December of that year. Audiences could attend events live or online, witnessing cutting-edge work by emerging artists from across Europe and Poland.
In 2021 and 2022, the first two editions were funded by: European Commission, Foundation for Polish-German Cooperation, Instituto Cervantes, City of Warsaw – Praga-Południe District, NEW WAVE Foundation, HELIDARSTEA
Over 10 festival days, they presented: 26 performances and choreographic etudes and 12 dance films.
These editions confirmed the demand in Warsaw for a new kind of dance festival – one that promotes debuts, supports emerging choreographic voices, and reflects themes relevant to younger generations.

II International Movement Festival U:NEW – VIRAL VISIONS in Warszaw
II International Movement Festival U:NEW – VIRAL VISIONS in Warsaw
The second edition of the International Movement Festival U:NEW – Viral Visions took place in Warsaw from 29 September to 2 October 2022. The program featured choreographies, performances, and video works by artists from Poland, Italy, Ukraine, the USA, France, Mexico, Belarus, Austria, and Slovakia.
The festival opened with a reworked version of the performance “Extinction”, now titled “Extinction: REplay”, with a new dramaturgy performed by HOTELOKO movement makers: Agata Życzkowska, Mirek Woźniak, and Karina Szutko.
Another highlight was the Italian company Zappulla DMN Company from Palermo with the performance “Cudna Wizja – Wunderkammer”.
The program also included the premiere of “Czarny ból” choreographed by Iryna Kupriianova (Poland/Ukraine), as well as several short, female-led choreographies showcased during the “HER MOVE” evening, featuring performances by Zoe Marstone, Diana Sznek, Małgorzata Bartecka, Idalia Roberta Kurowska, Klara Florek, and Karina Szutko.
Agata Życzkowska, the founder and director of the festival, described the concept as follows:
“This year’s edition of U:NEW Festival is held under the theme VIRAL VISIONS. After the pandemic and the period of isolation in our homes—and often within our own countries—2022 has finally become more open to travel, including internationally. That is why we are excited to host, among others, a company from Sicily – Zappulla DMN Company – and finally present their work to a wider audience, hopefully without capacity limits. The show will be held in a completely new cultural venue in Warsaw: Terminal Kultury Gocław, which offers a beautiful performance hall and several spaces dedicated to dance.
During our festival events taking place across different locations in Warsaw, we aim to reflect on the cultural resilience our societies have developed during the pandemic, and to explore the needs and desires of contemporary dance audiences attending our programs at the Theatre Institute or CPK. All of this, of course, will be framed by new artistic visions expressed in various forms of movement and performance.”*
Just like in the first edition, the festival’s themes revolved around ecology, care for our planet, human rights, gender equality, cultural identity, and tolerance.
The International Movement Festival U:NEW aims to promote contemporary dance in its new and experimental forms, and to strengthen international collaboration between Polish artists and foreign partners.
An essential part of the festival is the presentation of works by young artists and youth groups, highlighting emerging visions and supporting the development of a new, young dance audience.
The 2022 program included:
- The performative conference: “VIRAL VISIONS: WHO ARE YOU? WHERE ARE YOU?”, featuring performances, video screenings, dance workshops, and discussions
- The evening “HER MOVE”, focused on female perspectives in choreography
- “WAVES OF DANCE – VIRAL VISIONS”, a special edition of Warsaw’s Night of Dance
Why U:NEW?
U:NEW is the result of a wave of new perspectives on contemporary dance in Poland, Europe, and around the world. The U:NEW Festival is a flow of actions touching upon identity. It is a collection of visual, musical, and movement postcards that reflect the dynamic sociological and philosophical changes of recent years.
It attempts to understand the rapid development of technology and to find one’s place within this evolving space.
It presents absurd, comic, and sincere actions that connect searching individuals. It offers honest confessions, social manifestos, and artistic statements.
It creates an interactive image of both small towns and big cities. It is a dialogue and a voice in the discussion about the future of Europe and the world.
